How our surf lessons work

Learn to Surf in San Diego – The Easy & Safe Way

Learning to surf is way easier (and safer) with a professional surf coach.
At Saltwater Surf Lessons, every session starts on the sand where you'll learn the basics:

  • Surf safety

  • How to paddle out

  • How to pop up and ride a wave

We begin with the proven 3-step pop-up method. Then it’s time to hit the water and put your new skills into action.

What to Expect During Your Surf Lesson

Our San Diego surf instructors are hands-on and supportive every step of the way. You'll be guided:

  • Into the water safely

  • Into the perfect position to catch your first waves

  • Through each ride with live feedback

After each wave, we offer tips and adjustments to help you build muscle memory fast. Our step-by-step method makes surfing simple.
99.9% of our students ride waves during their first lesson.

Where to Take Surf Lessons in San Diego

We recommend beginner-friendly beach breaks like:

  • La Jolla Shores – Gentle waves, great for families

  • Ocean Beach - Lots of parking, good eats, and waves

  • Mission Beach – Wide open and welcoming to all skill levels

All 3 offer public parking, restrooms, and showers, making them ideal spots to learn to surf in San Diego.

Are Surf Lessons Worth It?

Absolutely.
Trying to teach yourself can lead to bad habits and slow progress. Our experienced watermen will help you:

  • Avoid common mistakes

  • Build confidence faster

  • Surf your first wave in 90 minutes or less

How Much Are Surf Lessons in San Diego?

Prices vary based on location and group size:

  • Private lessons: ~$140 per surfer

  • Group lessons/packages: More affordable per person

  • Rates vary by beach (La Jolla, Mission Beach, etc.)

How Many Surf Lessons Do I Need?

We suggest our 3-lesson package for the best results.
This gives you time to:

  • Practice safely

  • Build core skills

  • Gain confidence in Southern California surf conditions

Progress varies by body type, athleticism, and consistency—but 3 lessons is a great start.

How to Prepare for Your Surf Lesson

Get your body ready:

  • Stretch your shoulders, quads, and lower back

  • Do some yoga or light warm-up

  • Paddle out warm: Move around for at least 5–10 minutes before entering the water

Do I Really Need Surf Lessons?

If you're new to surfing or not confident in the water—yes. If you want to shave off years of frustration, also yes.
Some San Diego surf spots require long paddle-outs and serious stamina. A coach will help with:

  • Paddle techniques

  • Wave selection

  • Safety and etiquette

Can My Whole Family Take a Surf Lesson?

Yes! We love family surf groups.
There’s nothing better than sharing the stoke together. Surfing in San Diego makes for an unforgettable family adventure.
